Retiring DuPont Co. General Counsel Tom Sager traveled to Philadelphia for a meeting at Ballard Spahr in the early 1990s as part of his oversight of DuPont’s outside counsel convergence program.

Having never done work for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Ballard Spahr didn’t know anything about the company and vice versa. A partner’s board membership alongside the then-GC of DuPont got the firm the initial meeting and it was a unique pitch by former firm Chairman Arthur Makadon that put the firm in consideration for what has become a highly sought-after spot on DuPont’s list of primary law firms.
