Gov. Jack Markell’s nomination last week of Superior Court President Judge James T. Vaughn Jr. to replace retired Justice Caroyln Berger on the Delaware Supreme Court surprised some in the legal community. While no one is questioning Vaughn’s qualifications for the high court, attorneys viewed former Superior Court Judge Joseph R. Slights III as the favorite because of his age and experience with criminal and corporate law.

But support for Vaughn among Kent County politicians, coupled with his background, may have vaulted him to the top of Markell’s list, plugged-in observers told Delaware Law Weekly.
