The Delaware Supreme Court has publicly reprimanded Alex J. Brown, the attorney for embattled insurance executive Jeffrey Cohen, after he filed litigation in Maryland in violation of a seizure and injunction order barring additional lawsuits in the case. Although the court could have suspended Brown, it accepted the Office of Disciplinary Counsel’s recommendation of a public reprimand, citing the difficulties the attorney had with Cohen as his client.
Cohen, the founder and former president, chairman and CEO of Indemnity Insurance Corp., faces legal action in the Delaware Court of Chancery after the Delaware Department of Insurance initiated a petition to seize the company’s books to investigate fraud allegations. In addition, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has alleged Cohen plotted to murder Chancery Court Vice Chancellor J. Travis Laster, who is overseeing the Insurance Department seizure case. However, it does not appear criminal charges have been filed in relation to the alleged plot against Laster.
