A legislative effort to abolish the state’s death penalty was defeated on a 23-16 vote in the Delaware House of Representatives on Jan. 28, just hours after the Delaware Supreme Court said it will review the law’s constitutionality in light of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling.
Lawmakers debated the bill, SB 40, for about an hour before its primary sponsor, state Rep. Sean Lynn, D-Dover, asked for a roll call. Nine Democrats spoke in support of the bill, and one Republican, Rep. Daniel Short, R-Seaford, rose against it during the floor debate.
