Lt. Gov. Matt Denn said Delaware’s criminal court judges are too lenient and, if elected attorney general, he will arrange for judges to meet face-to-face with law enforcement officials to discuss the impact their rulings have on communities. However, his opponent, Ted Kittila, counters that prosecutors failing to demand harsher sentences, not judicial decisions, are why violent offenders often return to Delaware streets.
The discussions between judicial officers and law authorities is one of several proposals Denn unveiled to combat violent crime in Delaware. He told Delaware Law Weekly that the idea for the meetings came after he spoke with “frontline law enforcement officials” about violent offenders. Denn said the officials expressed frustration over the release of offenders back into the community because of insufficient bail or lenient sentencing.
