DuPont appears to have opened talks toward a potential merger deal with Dow Chemical Co., in a move that could create the world’s second-largest chemical company, according to media reports. But those reports and one of Delaware’s U.S. senators differed on whether a final agreement is imminent.

The Wall Street Journal first reported Tuesday night that the two chemical giants were in “advanced talks,” and Bloomberg reported that a deal could be announced as soon as this week. Both publications cited sources who cautioned that a final accord is no guarantee at this point, and talks could still fall apart. But U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Delaware, said he saw the deal as “far from done.”
